Posted the info about the local strongman contest here in Salisbury, NC next month on another website and got this response, didn't know how to respond, maybe you guys can help me out:

"I'm so bummed out. I saw the link, and thought, man this would be fun, and it's only 2.5 hours from my house. I ran downstairs to speak to the Warden (er... my wife), and got shot down immediately.....

BTW, does anyone know how to combat the ole "We can't have you hurt, you're too important to this family." plea?

18 years of marriage, and to the best of my knowledge there is no victory over this line.

Realistically, I'm pretty sure the second Atlas Stone would kill me though....."

It would be real easy to write up a short article on this but the truth is the guy really doesn't want to do the contest. Plus he and his wife have a much bigger problem that they need to deal with. Every single person I have known over the years whose wife (or vice versa) wouldn't let them do things they wanted to do ended up divorced - even the ones whose marriages seemed solid in other ways. You can't step on peoples dreams forever without problems.

I don't think there's much you can say. Chris is right. Only resentment and secrecy lie ahead - the stuff broken marriages and affairs are made of. As long as resources and responsibilities allow, people for the most part do what is truly a priority to them without excuses. We all owe consideration to our spouses, but if taken at face value this is grown man asking permission from his mommy. Heart disease, car accidents, and slips in the tub are more eminent threats. I hope he/she is taking precautions.

If you're feeling gracious, encourage him to train in his area, remind him of show and tell date on 8-23, or invite them to come watch. You can always suggest he enter the Y's injury free triathlon. : )

Unless this guy is living in a bubble, I can think of a lot easier ways to get hurt than entering that contest.

Man, I'm glad my wife doesn't get like that.

8/14

Cruised on over to the YMCA primarily to utilize the childcare, it's Saturday after all. Ran into my college student friend Alex, who was working as the fitness room attendant, so in betwixt sets of incline machine BP and neutral grip pull ups I talked with him about badminton, David Beckham's tramp stamp, Central American politics, the nature of consciousness, and that Star Trek episode where Mr Spock goes into Plak Tow. Then went out back and pulled the tire sled about 70 ft each run:

45lb
45
90lb
90
90
90

Big tire x 1, quit because my legs were spent and I wasn't feeling it.

I guess I'll be nice to the guy who says his wife won't let him compete, maybe invite him out to practice so he can at least see what it all about.

I've been at Myrtle Beach this week. First day there I used the gym and did DLs and some KB stuff. Exercise for the remainder of the week consisted of boogie boarding, Frisbee on the sand, sand sprints, and bodyweight training on the beach. Here are some vids from one of my beach training sessions:

Lunge jump http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hpR4QQd03E

Bear crawl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqvNj03X9FI

Push up to star http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz-N9LP0EJc

Traveling push ups http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFgoCPiCuxg

Sand jump squat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPmsCGMdpQk

BW squats http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nDl6wiWi_o

Ab walk outs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oEC3cAl1jk

If in the area I recommend checking out the Ethiopian restaurant, Redi-et http://www.redi-et.com/
The food is great, and the customary way to eat it is with your bare hand. Ethiopian beer = good stuff!

Hawaiian Rumble mini golf is fun, love the flame shooting volcano...... http://www.prominigolf.com/rumble.html
Actually made par on about half the holes, despite playing an average of once a decade.

Tire- 10 flips

Farmers walk- 120lb/hand 50 feet couple times, one turn

Tire sled, set up to simulate bus pull with rope- on asphalt, 180lb for 80ft

After reviewing my squat video it's obvious I'm not getting the speed I want, so I dropped the poundage to get back to lifting faster. Took and evening tri tp the Charlotte Y to help promote the Sept 25 strongman contest, about 10 guys showed to practice the events. One fellow is a pro wrestler, he saw the ad I placed on Craigslist, guy is 6'1" 375lb and his name is Pitt. Nice guy, going to try and lift with him sometime.

Here's the local steep hill I'll sprint next time I'm at the park.

Humpday

Felt like poo, I have a head cold, so training was adjusted down.

Joint mobility
Sheaf toss- just moved my shovel like I've seen the Highland Games guys do, about 5 min
Heavy hula, 5 min

If you drive a minivan please be careful around mud, these things get stuck pretty easy.

Sorry to hear you're under the weather. Feel better soon. Kudos on two-a-days!

Is this #2 on getting the van stuck or just an old pick? Keep a rope and block & tackle in the van and that'll be good for the bus pull.

Thanks, I'm mostly better. This was about 8 months ago, I was just looking through my pics for something educational to post! I like the bus pull practice idea:)

August 26

Pushpress

95 x 5
115 x 3
135 x 3
155 x 3

DB row

25lb x 16
50 x 10
50 x 10
50 x 10

Trapbar farmer's, 50 ft, one 180 turn, 210lb for five runs

Trapbar shurgs

210lb x 15

I'll be wearing regular shoes for farmer's training, in years past I've worn my Vibrams for all events in strongman. In the carry/walk events this has cost me points and placings. It felt alien walking with a heavy heel strike, I don't care for it, but I want to be competitive in this event. A month to go, time to get in gear!

Nice training going on here!

Just wondering - do you do your FW's in your yard or at a gym? I enjoy doing them around my backyard with a pair of dumbbells.

Thanks Todd, I'm weak but getting better. I do my FW at home in the yard with my trap bar, since there will be a frame used in my next strongman contest.

Saturday

Incline DB BP/ feet up push ups

25lb x 12/20
35 x 10/20
35 x 10/20

Incline hammer curl/ standing hammer curl/ alternating hammer curl

Hammer preacher curl/ standing curl/ Zotman curl

25lb x 10/8/5

Big tire flip 5x5

Note to self; push that tire down hard so it lands squarely, this allows for a quicker pickup on the subsequent flip.
